Symptoms and complications from mesothelioma

On Behalf of | Jan 25, 2018 | mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is often deadly, as it’s a very aggressive type of cancer. It often occurs in the lungs, and it’s been linked to asbestos exposure. The risk is severe, which is why asbestos is no longer allowed to be used in building materials the way it once was.

If you’re worried that you’ve been exposed and may have mesothelioma, the following are some of the most common symptoms to watch out for:

  • Chest pain. This is often located below the rib cage.
  • Coughing that is severe and even painful.
  • Lumps of tissue that develop on your chest. They’re found below the skin.
  • A consistent shortness of breath.
  • Significant weight loss that cannot be explained any other way. People often notice this when they know they haven’t changed their diets or started working out more.

One of the issues with mesothelioma is that it can start to impact organs and structures as it spreads. This may lead to further complications, which could include:

  • Trouble breathing.
  • Trouble swallowing when eating and drinking.
  • Consistent pain in the chest.
  • Pain throughout the body due to the pressure on your spinal cord and nerves.
  • Issues with a buildup of fluid within your chest cavity.

These are very serious complications that can lead to severe pain and suffering. As noted, this disease is also often fatal, so the complications may simply grow worse until the disease runs its course, even with treatment.

As such, it’s very important to know your legal rights if you’ve been diagnosed with mesothelioma. This is especially true if you’ve been exposed to unsafe work materials or equipment over the course of your career.
