Class action about talcum powder may only be the first

There are probably a dozen chemicals in the bathroom that we rely on to stay clean and fresh. It would be a violation to learn that one or more of them had never been as safe as the maker claimed. That is the scenario playing out in several courts as a staple of bathroom hygiene products is under scrutiny.

The lawsuits allege that talcum powder, often used as an absorbent for intimate areas, was contaminated with asbestos and the manufacturer was aware of it before it claims. Asbestos and its small fibers have been associated with lung problems including mesothelioma and other types of cancers.

The first successful lawsuit, a class-action involving 22 women who claimed tainted talcum powder caused ovarian cancer, involved a $4.69 billion payout to the plaintiffs and their survivors. Courts in Missouri, California and South Carolina are expected to rule on related cases in the upcoming year.

The first settlement related to a claim about talcum powder as a health hazard was a $1.5 million payout to resolve a New York woman’s claims. If $1.67 million is an assumed payout for future related lawsuits, the manufacturer could spend $20 billion resolving plaintiffs’ claims that are already known.

Victims of lung issues, ovarian problems or related illnesses that are possibly related to talcum powder use may consider filing similar claims in the proper jurisdiction. An attorney can help victims with medical records of their problems to analyze evidence of the involvement of talcum powder and counsel people on the best way to resolve them through financial damages.
