The children’s accessories makeup and accessories store Claire’s has recalled various makeup sets from its shelves in recent months. Its latest voluntary recall was issued on June 9. The Claire’s JoJo Siwa Makeup Set, Bath/Lot No. S180109 is thought to contain the harmful mineral asbestos, a known carcinogen.

This latest asbestos contamination was discovered by researchers at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Their scientists routinely test consumer products for potential toxins.

If they find that a product may be hazardous for customers who use them, then they’ll typically notify the manufacturer, marketers and distributors of the product. If they don’t issue a voluntary recall of a product, then the FDA will often issue a mandatory one.

In this particular situation, the part of the kit that came back as containing asbestos fibers is the set’s sparkling powder or talc. The young entertainer that the set was named after released a public statement soon after the makeup kit was recalled saying that she supports its removal from Claire’s store shelves.

The United States Public Interest Research Group’s (US PIRG) national toxics program director commented on the recall of this latest makeup set. She expressed how she’s concerned that unsafe products such as this continue to make it onto store shelves in this country.

She also highlighted how as of now, it’s still legal for manufacturers to use asbestos in formulating makeup in Louisiana and all other 49 states. This is something the US PIRG is looking to combat.

Asbestos is a cancer-causing fiber that occurs naturally in our environment. Exposure to contaminated products doesn’t just put our children at risk of developing debilitating lung conditions such as mesothelioma, but it also puts those workers who manufacture, distribute or use the product on others at significant risk of harm too.

An asbestos attorney can advise you as to whether you’ve worked in a high-risk job site in New Orleans and if so, what the chances are that you’ll develop a debilitating lung disease in the future are.
