Why should you be concerned about exposure to asbestos?

Most people in Louisiana know that asbestos is a dangerous compound to be exposed to and that, in the past few decades as the danger has become more apparent, this compound is used far less than it previously was in many situations. However, what some people don’t know is that asbestos is still all around us in many different ways, including in the products that were used to construct older buildings. As a result, exposure to asbestos is still a very real threat. So, why should you be concerned about exposure to asbestos?

The dangers of asbestos

Well, primarily, the danger is that extended exposure to asbestos can lead to serious and oftentimes life-threatening diseases. As previous posts here have pointed out, mesothelioma is one such disease. Other forms of lung cancer are a possibility as well. These diseases can be painful and terminal.

Of course, not everyone who has been inside a building that was constructed by using products containing asbestos is in danger of developing one of these serious diseases. Those who develop asbestos-related diseases have often had prolonged exposure due to their employment. Besides the construction industry, asbestos-related products have also previously been heavily used in shipbuilding and oil refining, for example, which are common areas of employment in and near Louisiana.
