Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is usually caused by exposure to asbestos, which damages the lungs through repeated injury and inflammation. It can crop up long after someone was exposed to the toxins that caused the illness.

There are four kinds of mesothelioma, which include:

  • Peritoneal mesothelioma
  • Pleural mesothelioma
  • Pericardial mesothelioma
  • Testicular mesothelioma

The most common of these is pleural mesothelioma, which makes up around 75% of the cases seen in patients today. The least common is testicular mesothelioma, which only impacts around 1% of patients.

It’s important to note that there are different kinds of mesothelioma because the reality is that you may have different symptoms depending on where your disease has spread. While peritoneal mesothelioma is located inside the abdominal cavity, pericardial mesothelioma infects the lining that surrounds the heart. Pleural mesothelioma affects the lungs, while testicular mesothelioma affects the testes.

Any of these kinds of mesothelioma could be caused by exposure to asbestos. Some common sources of exposure include:

  • Working in the military
  • Living with someone who worked with asbestos products
  • Renovating a building that contained asbestos
  • Working in an asbestos mine or processing plant
  • Working as a job as a construction worker, firefighter or in another high-risk field.

With any kind of mesothelioma, it is important that you get assistance and treatment as soon as you can. Though the cancer may not develop for many decades, it is essential that you spot it when it does occur as soon as possible. By doing so, you’ll be giving yourself the best opportunity to overcome the disease. You may also be able to seek compensation to help you with your financial losses.
