If you have done any research at all into asbestos and the diseases and illnesses it causes, you have probably come across both mesothelioma and asbestosis. However, since they have the same cause and some similarities, you might not know the differences between the two. They might even seem like interchangeable concepts.

Why does it matter?

However, there are some differences that you will need to know if you or someone you love has been affected by asbestos exposure. They could impact your future health care decisions and the direction of a potential legal claim.

What are the differences?

There are a few important differences between asbestosis and mesothelioma, especially involving the symptoms and the seriousness of the two.

Asbestosis involves symptoms that include fatigue, high blood pressure, hypertension and shortness of breath with small amounts of physical exertion. Mesothelioma symptoms include weight loss, chest pains and persistent coughing.

In terms of the seriousness of both illnesses, mesothelioma is generally seen as more serious. It is a cancer, incurable, impacting several areas of the body. Asbestosis is not cancerous. It is a form of pulmonary fibrosis that thickens lung tissue.

What are the similarities?

Although the seriousness and symptoms are different, there are some key similarities:

  • Both are serious illnesses that could cause tremendous pain, discomfort and ultimately death.
  • Both are caused by inhalation of and exposure to asbestos, either in a working situation or through secondary exposure.
  • Both could be a cause for a lawsuit to recover damages for medical expenses and pain and suffering.
