Once a doctor has diagnosed you with mesothelioma or any other asbestos-related disease, you may want to look at compensation options. To do so, you need to work out where the asbestos exposure occurred.

It may be obvious to you. Perhaps you once had a job where you spent years removing asbestos from old buildings. However, things are not always so clear.

Your asbestos exposure could have happened years ago

Remember that asbestos-related illness can take years to show, so it is crucial to go back through your working history as far as possible. Workplace exposure to asbestos was extremely common in the past. Here are some suggestions:

  • Consider writing down a line for every year since you first worked (1963,1964,1965 etc.). Make sure you can fill in where you were working for each of those years.
  • If you struggle with the dates, putting important events in each year can help. For example, if 1972 was the birth of your eldest child, put that down. Then think about that event, perhaps with help from family and friends. Your wife may remember how you arrived late dressed in bright orange work overalls. Or how you drove her and the baby home from the hospital in the company pick up. These little details can help you build a picture, making it easier to remember all the places you worked.
  • Look through old tax records and other papers. You may have a box of files from years of mortgage applications, tax filings and so on that could help you put together a timeline of your work history.
  • Thinking about the people you worked with can also help you recall jobs. You may remember specific people — and even be able to contact them to ask if they remember what years a company was in operation, when the factory closed and so on.

An attorney who deals with these asbestos claims can tell you which companies others have claimed against to see if you worked at any of them and help you file your own claim.
