Can mesothelioma impact your heart?

On Behalf of | Apr 8, 2022 | mesothelioma

If you’re diagnosed with mesothelioma, the first thing they’ll probably tell you is whether you have pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma. The first is the most common type, which impacts your lungs and respiratory system, while the second is a type that targets the abdomen and specifically the membrane that lines that cavity.

The type that you have plays a big role in the treatment that you get, along with the side effects that you see. It can also impact how quickly doctors are able to diagnose mesothelioma in the first place. For instance, if a doctor assumes that you don’t have mesothelioma because it is not in your chest cavity, they could end up overlooking the same issue in your abdomen.

But what other organs could be impacted? Could it do anything to your heart?

This can happen in rare cases

It is true that mesothelioma can sometimes affect the heart. These cases are considered rare, along with cases in which it affects a person’s reproductive organs. This isn’t usually how the disease manifests itself, but it can.

The longer the delay in treatment, the greater the chance that the cancer is going to spread to other organs and other parts of your body. In fact, this is one of the most dangerous things about cancer, as spreading diseases are often very hard to treat and may become impossible to treat when they spread too far.

What options do you have?

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or if a loved one has, it can be a life-changing diagnosis. You must make sure that you know about all of the options at your disposal.
