New treatment showing some success in treating mesothelioma

People who were exposed to asbestos are at risk of developing mesothelioma, which is a fatal cancer that usually begins in the lungs. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot that can be done for a person who is suffering from this condition. The treatment usually involves trying to minimize the symptoms of the condition while also slowing the spread.

Some patients who have mesothelioma who haven’t had previous chemotherapy might benefit from a two-drug combination that’s shown some level of success in treating the condition. There are a few points that are important to know about the immunotherapy treatment, which combines the drugs nivolumab and ipilimumab.

Longer life expectancy, but not a cure

Mesothelioma doesn’t have a cure, so the focus is on allowing the patient to live the fullest life possible for the longest time. The two-drug combination was shown to improve the overall survival of a mesothelioma patient from 14.1 months on chemotherapy to 18.1 months with the immunotherapy option.

The treatment doesn’t come without risks, however. Individuals who are taking it can experience some unpleasant side effects. These can include musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, coughing and decreased appetite.

Treatments for mesothelioma can be harsh and expensive. Patients who have been diagnosed with this condition may opt to pursue compensation for the expenses they’re dealing with because of their condition. These cases can be rather complex, so it’s best to seek experienced legal guidance. Be sure to do this as soon as you find out about your medical status so you can get the compensation you deserve as quickly as possible.
