Many people find work in hazardous occupations, such as manufacturing, factory work, mechanics, shipyard work and construction because it helps provide living wages for their families. They put in a lot of manual labor hours and occasionally become ill or injured as a result. Many of these illnesses and injuries are minor. But, many of these workers are at an increased risk of developing cancer or other diseases if they happen to handle asbestos.

Unfortunately, many of these workers unintentionally expose their loved ones to asbestos. Secondhand asbestos exposure is a hidden danger for many households. Here’s what you should know:

Working with asbestos can hurt the ones close to you

Asbestos was a popularly used mineral to help reduce heat and fires. Over time, it was discovered that asbestos exposure could lead to cancer, which led to bans. Historically, employers have not taken asbestos as seriously as they need to. Many businesses failed to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their workers, and some even neglected to inform staff members about the possibility of asbestos exposure.

Workers could have brought asbestos home to their loved ones if they lacked the proper safety gear or sanitary facilities. Being around someone who has asbestos on their skin, clothing or hair may cause a family or friend to inhale trace asbestos fibers.

Many family members of people who handle asbestos can experience life-long medical conditions. Family and friends may start to experience early signs of asbestos exposure, such as shortness of breath and tight-chested. These signs may indicate that a family or friend is suffering from cancer or mesothelioma.

Employees and family members exposed to asbestos may need to learn about their legal rights. Asbestos-related illnesses may be cause to seek compensation for medical bills and losses.
